Free write off something we talked about in my creative writing class: that all fantasy/sci-fi stories usually have a feast scene, because it can show so many things about the culture and characters. So we had a few minutes of free write, and this it, no edits.

Free Write on a Food Scene

Jade sat down at the banquette table, people from other military branches sitting down on the authentic wood chairs down the long table. At the head sat the general, dressed in a fine red military uniform, laughing with the woman to his right. Jade turned her attention to the food in front of her, attempting to calm her rising anxiety.

The konko delivery was sat in the middle, roasted until the skin was charred. All six legs were intact, with the feet cut off and raw around the main body. It was glazed with its own sizzled blood, cooked on a stove with sugar and salt. Inside the konko’s body was vegetables stuffed into the chest cavity, most burnt beyond recognition. Jade’s face twisted with disgust and her stomach churned. Barbaric, she thought, looking for something a bit more edible.
