Alphas
An idea that came to me in a very vivid and disturbing dream. The dream was too long to write in one sitting, my maybe I’ll tackle it one day.
As for this, this is just writing down the first part of the dream, just so that I don’t forget it. Rough draft, nothing has been edited. 🙂
It was midnight again, and I woke up screaming, my wrist aflame. I looked down at the soft flesh, grabbing it with my right hand with a grimace. I bit down against my tongue, trying to keep myself from crying out anymore. I hoped I hadn’t woken Her, but I had and She came in quickly.
She was pretty. Tall and much more muscular than I, with long brown hair ruffled from sleep. She usually wore it up in a loose bun, letting small whisps of hair fall around her sharp jaw. Now it was frazzled, tangled in knots and standing on end as if it were filled with static. She practically ran to me, grabbed my left hand and swatted my right away. She peered at the wrist, as if she might find something new there. With a sigh, She tapped my wrist and peered up at me with dark eyes.
“Another nightmare?” She asked. I swallowed hard and exhaled. I nodded.
“Yeah. I’m sorry to have woken you. It just…” I trailed off and looked down at the veins in my wrist. “It just felt so real.”
“Of course, Mel.” She pulled away and sat down at the foot of my bed. I sat up and pressed my back against the wall. I closed my eyes and sighed.
“What was it about this time?” She prodded, putting her hand on my knee. I frowned and opened my eyes, only to fix them on the ceiling.
“I don’t remember.” A lie.
“Hmm.” She looked at me. The hard kind of look She gives me when She knows something is wrong. She rubbed my leg through the blankets. “Is that so?”
I turned my eyes to Her. Her gaze is dominant and demanding. The look of an Alpha.
I once fought for that title, Alpha. I lifted weights as much as I could to build muscle behind Her back, but She noticed. She laughed and suggested we work together. Yet my body cannot hold muscle—not like Her’s, anyway. In a few days I gave up. She asked me why, but I did not answer. How could I? I was fighting to challenge Her rank. Even if She said we were both the Alphas, I know there can only be one. She said we could be the exception to the rule, but we can’t. No one can. No matter how much you fight it, someone always rules. And someone always submits, whether they like it or not.
So as the Omega, I kept my eyes on Her’s a while longer, just to show that, though I respect her position, there can’t be two female Alphas in a two woman Pack. No. That is unheard of.
Eventually I looked away and answered Her question: “It was about that man.”
She frowned. “Again?”
“Again.”
“Melody, you can’t—”
“It’s not like I can help it, Madeline.” I snapped, glaring at the floor. “They’re dreams, not a Pack to dominate.”
Her brow furrowed and I felt Her hand tense even through the blankets. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing, nothing. I’m just saying—” I looked back to Her. She was showing her teeth, the canine fangs flashing amidst the herbivore teeth. I did not dare copy Her action. Instead I said: “It’s nothing, really. I didn’t mean it.”
Her lips fell back over Her teeth and She stood. “All right, Mel. Then you keep your nightmares. I’m going back to bed.”
